Wow! Where did our big kids come from and TIME PLEASE SLOW DOWN!!!

So this age may already have way too many assignments and expectations from school and virtual dance, soccer, etc- but we are here to help with some “extra brain building material” if needed.

As a 4th/5th grader, your child should have mastered or almost mastered ALL math multiplication facts. Whether you use flashcards or an online fact fluency program- encourage them and work daily to master those facts! This age comes with lots of word problems and frustrations will run higher if the math facts do not come easily to their minds.

Additionally, comprehension should not get in their way as they begin to read longer fiction (fake) and non-fiction (true) texts. While reading fiction- they should think about Characters, Settings, Problems, and Solutions and how these help build the overall meaning of the text. Main idea, I always tell my students, is what is MOST IMPORTANT about the text. Theme is the message (see that THEME….THEMEssage) like hard work or friendship or family first.  With non-fiction, tell your student to be aware of headings, charts, bold font, illustrations, and any pictures/captions. With this in mind, we have linked some resources below to help you in your journey of continued learning!

We LOVE this timer as a visual for how long we should read as a family, do assignments, clean up, screen time, etc.-

First of all- what are we reading?  Here is a short list to get started:

*Also see our our blog post regarding Tween and Teens and Back to Basics for more chapter book ideas*

Next up- some activities to keep them engaged!

Lego Chain reactions kit

Active play sticks

Here are some great multiplication and division fact fluency resources-

Attention Attention! Please make sure your child has a dictionary to use somewhere in the home. Here is a link to a great Scholastic Children’s one. Have them look up items to research and show them that GOOGLE is NOT the only way! Oftentimes on standardized testing, students get questions of dictionary definitions and this will help. Walking them through how to use a dictionary will be a beneficial activity. Have fun!

Brainquest workbooks and question cards-

*We included the “in between” grades so that you can catch up or challenge your child as you see needed. The question card decks are an invaluable resource to have. They will help you find out what your child knows and how you need to challenge them. It truly provides learning moments for the whole family! We love these!
